Evidence of plant-soil feedback in South Texas grasslands associated with invasive Guinea grass

چکیده
Plant-soil feedback (PSF) processes play an integral role in structuring plant communities. In native grasslands, PSF has a largely negative or stabilizing effect on growth contributing to species coexistence and succession, but perturbations system can alter PSF, leading long-term changes. Through changes soil abiotic biotic properties, invasion by non-native plants strong impact belowground with broad shifts historical PSFs. Guinea grass, Megathyrsus maximus , emerging invasive South Texas, efficiently exclude part due its fast rate high biomass accumulation, impacts are unknown. Here, we provide first look at Texas savannas currently undergoing grass. this pilot study, addressed the question of how presence M. may compared uninvaded grasslands. Under greenhouse conditions, assessed germination grass seed bank collected from grasslands invaded We found that grown grew taller accumulated higher than Plants were more rich abundant had savannas, evidence support direction positive appearing reinforce possibly Future work is needed determine mechanisms behind observed further explore invasion.

Plant community composition, not diversity, regulates soil respiration in grasslands.
Soil respiration is responsible for recycling considerable quantities of carbon from terrestrial ecosystems to the atmosphere. There is a growing body of evidence that suggests that the richness of plants in a community can have significant impacts on ecosystem functioning, but the specific influences of plant species richness (SR), plant functional-type richness and plant community composition...
متن کاملFeedback in the Plant-soil System
■ Abstract Feedback between plants and the soil is frequently invoked on the basis of evidence of mutual effects. Feedback can operate through pathways involving soil physical properties, chemical and biogeochemical properties and processes, and biological properties, including the community composition of the microbiota and soil fauna. For each pathway, we review the mechanistic basis and asse...

15 صفحه اولNegative plant /soil feedback and species coexistence
Different mechanisms, including equilibrium and non-equilibrium processes, have been taken into account as possible theoretical explanations of species coexistence. Despite the ample evidence on the existence of negative plant /soil feedback in both agriculture and natural vegetation, the role of these processes in the organization and dynamics of plant communities has so far been neglected. In...
متن کاملSoil surface macrofaunal communities associated with earthworm casts in grasslands of the Eastern Plains of Colombia
Earthworms are known to modify life conditions for other soil organisms through their drilospheric activities. The effects of a large anecic species, Martiodrilus carimaguensis JimeÂnez and Moreno, on soil macrofaunal communities were investigated in a natural and a man-made grassland of the Eastern Plains of Colombia. Invertebrates were sampled by a standard hand sorting method at different sp...
